Ukraine Residence Permit (TRP) FAQ for Bangladeshi Nationals
The Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) is what allows you to legally live in Ukraine beyond your initial visa period. Most workers, students, and business founders need one. Here are answers to the most common questions we receive from Bangladeshi applicants navigating the DMSU process.
What is the difference between a visa and a TRP?
A Type D visa authorises entry into Ukraine and an initial period of stay. A TRP (Temporary Residence Permit) authorises ongoing residence in Ukraine beyond the initial visa period. For workers: you enter on a D-visa, then within 15 working days apply for TRP at DMSU. The TRP replaces the visa as your residence authorisation.
What ground do I need for a TRP?
Employment (valid work permit holder), Education (enrolled in accredited Ukrainian university), Family (spouse or minor child of Ukrainian citizen or permanent resident), Business (registered Ukrainian LLC / TOV with active status). You must have an active, verifiable ground — it cannot be nominal.
How long does TRP processing take?
DMSU is required to process within 15 working days. In practice, wartime conditions have sometimes extended this. Apply as early as possible after arrival — within the first week if you can. Late application risks overstay even if you are within the legal window.
What address do I register for TRP?
You need a registered residential address in Ukraine (propiska). Your employer often arranges this. A landlord can register you at a rented property. Without a registered address, DMSU will not issue TRP.
Can I travel outside Ukraine while on a TRP?
Yes, with your valid TRP and passport. However, if you leave Ukraine for more than 6 months cumulatively in any year, your TRP may be considered abandoned. Keep your employer informed of travel and ensure your registered address remains active.
When should I apply to renew my TRP?
At least 1 month before expiry. DMSU requires this. If you apply after expiry, even by one day, you are technically in overstay. Start the renewal process 6 weeks before expiry to account for document gathering time.
What if my employment ends while I am on a work-based TRP?
Your TRP is tied to the employment ground. If employment ends, you technically lose the lawful ground. You should either find a new employer (new work permit → TRP update) or transfer to a different ground (e.g., business, study, family) before TRP expiry. Consult a lawyer immediately if employment ends unexpectedly.
Can I apply for TRP without the work permit being in my hand?
No. DMSU requires the valid work permit as part of the TRP application on employment grounds. The employer must provide the original permit or a certified copy.
What documents does DMSU require for TRP application?
Typically: valid passport (original), D-visa (original), work permit or equivalent ground document, employment contract, proof of registered address, 2–4 passport photos, completed DMSU form, fee payment. DMSU requirements can vary — always confirm with a local representative.
How much does TRP cost?
State fee approximately UAH 800–1,200 (check current rate at dmsu.gov.ua). Plus any advisory or legal fees for document preparation.
Is a TRP the same as permanent residence?
No. TRP is temporary — 1 to 3 years, tied to a ground, must be renewed. Permanent residence (постійне проживання) requires typically 5 continuous years on TRP. See /library/legal-definitions/trp-vs-permanent-residence for the full comparison.
What is the difference between a work-based TRP and a business TRP?
A work-based TRP is granted to a foreign national who holds a valid Ukrainian work permit issued by DSZ — meaning a Ukrainian employer applied for the permit and the worker is employed by that company. A business TRP is granted to the founder or director of a registered Ukrainian LLC (TOV) who operates their own business. The key difference: with a work-based TRP you are an employee and dependent on the employer's continued good standing; with a business TRP you are self-directed but must demonstrate that the company is genuinely operational. Business TRP requires proof of active commercial activity — invoices, tax filings, and a functioning company — whereas work TRP requires only a valid work permit and employment contract.
Can I travel outside Ukraine while my TRP is being processed?
Not without significant risk. Once you submit a TRP application and receive the DMSU acceptance receipt, you are legally present in Ukraine during processing. If you leave Ukraine while the TRP is under review, your application may be cancelled and you will need to restart the process from outside Ukraine on a new visa. There is no provision to hold the application open across a border departure. If travel is urgently necessary before your TRP is issued, consult a Ukrainian immigration lawyer about options — in some circumstances urgent TRP processing can be requested.
What happens to my TRP if my employer closes?
If your employer closes, goes into liquidation, or has its EDRPOU struck from the register, your work permit becomes legally invalid and the employment ground for your TRP disappears. Your TRP card itself remains physically valid until its expiry date, but the legal basis for it no longer exists. You have a narrow window — typically 30 calendar days — to either secure a new employer (who must apply for a new work permit) or switch to a different TRP ground (business, family, study). If you take no action within this window, you are at risk of being considered to be in unlawful residence. Notify DMSU proactively if your employer closes and document the sequence of events.
How many times can I renew my TRP?
There is no statutory limit on the number of TRP renewals, provided you maintain a valid legal ground for each renewal period. You can renew employment-based TRP each year for as long as your work permit is renewed, and business TRP each year for as long as the company is active. After 5 years of continuous lawful TRP residence, you become eligible to apply for a Permanent Residence Permit (PPP), which removes the annual renewal requirement entirely. Most Bangladeshi nationals on the work route renew annually for several years before reaching PPP eligibility.
