Ukraine Type D Visa for Bangladeshi Workers: The Complete Embassy Guide

The Type D visa is the legal gateway to long-term residence in Ukraine — for work, study, business, and family reunion. Here is exactly what Bangladeshi applicants need to submit, where to submit it, and what happens if the Embassy says no.

What Is a Type D Visa?

Ukraine classifies its visas by letter: Type C is a short-stay visa (up to 90 days in any 180-day period, similar to a Schengen C visa). Type D is a long-stay national visa — issued as a multiple-entry visa for 90 days (Resolution No. 118, para. 4) so that you can enter Ukraine and then obtain a residence permit. It is issued by a Ukrainian embassy or consulate, never on arrival.

For Bangladeshi nationals, the deciding embassy is the Embassy of Ukraine in New Delhi. Ukraine has no embassy or consulate in Bangladesh; files are lodged at VFS Global in Dhaka. A Type D visa is the required document before a work permit holder can enter Ukraine — the work permit itself authorises employment, but the visa authorises entry and residence.

Key rule

You cannot enter Ukraine on a work permit alone. A Type D visa must be affixed to your passport before travel. The visa and the work permit are separate documents issued by separate authorities.

The Four Type D Purposes Relevant to Bangladeshis

Ukrainian rules label the visa only as type D (Resolution No. 118, para. 3); the purpose is shown by the supporting document listed in para. 8.

EmploymentNeeds a certified copy of the work permit (para. 8(1)). This is the standard route for Bangladeshi workers in construction, manufacturing, agriculture, and services. The work permit must be issued before the visa file is lodged.
StudyNeeds a university invitation registered under the Ministry of Education rules, or an electronic invitation issued through Ukraine's Unified Interagency Information System for foreign students (para. 8(4), 8(4-1)).
FamilyFor family members of Ukrainian citizens or of foreigners holding a Ukrainian temporary residence permit. Needs marriage or birth certificates (with an MFA Bangladesh apostille and a certified Ukrainian translation) and the sponsor's status documents.
Founders of a Ukrainian companyNeeds proof that you are a founder, participant or beneficial owner of a company in the Ukrainian Unified State Register with a stake of at least EUR 100,000 in its charter capital (para. 8(14-1)). A director without such a stake works on a work permit.

Documents Required for an Employment-Based Type D Visa

The employment category is the most common for Bangladeshi applicants. The following checklist reflects the requirements for applications lodged at VFS Dhaka as of May 2026. Always verify current requirements directly with the Embassy before your appointment, as consular requirements can change without notice.

  • Passport — original + two photocopies of the bio page; valid at least 3 months after your planned departure from Ukraine, with at least two blank pages, issued within the last 10 years (Resolution No. 118, para. 5)
  • Work Permit (certified copy) — issued by the Ukrainian State Employment Service (ДСЗ) to your employer, in your name (para. 8(1))
  • Medical Insurance — at least €30,000 cover; for a multiple-entry visa it must cover at least your first trip (para. 5)
  • Proof of funds — sufficient funds or proof of lawful income in Ukraine (para. 5)
  • Visa Application Form — completed online at visa.mfa.gov.ua and printed; must be signed in ink
  • Photograph — one colour photo, 35 × 45 mm (para. 5); fingerprints and a facial image are taken at VFS
  • Visa Fee — consular fee plus VFS service fee, per the current VFS Global Bangladesh–Ukraine fee sheet
  • Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) — not on the visa list (paras. 5, 8); the consul may request it (para. 10). If requested, use a Bangladesh Police certificate with an apostille from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh
  • BMET Smart Card — a Bangladesh exit requirement, checked at departure from Dhaka; it is issued after the visa and is outside the Ukrainian visa list

VFS Global Bangladesh: Where the File Is Lodged

Ukraine has outsourced visa application collection in Bangladesh to VFS Global. VFS operates as an administrative intake service — it collects your documents and forwards the application to the Embassy. Visa decisions are made exclusively by Ukrainian consular officers, not by VFS.

VFS Global Bangladesh operates appointment-based submission. Book your appointment at vfsglobal.com/ukraine/bangladesh. A VFS service fee applies on top of the consular fee; both amounts and payment methods are listed on the current VFS fee sheet.

Where to lodge

Ukraine has no embassy or visa window in Bangladesh, so every file goes through the Ukraine Visa Application Centre run by VFS Global in Dhaka, by appointment. VFS takes the documents and biometrics and forwards the file; the Embassy of Ukraine in New Delhi decides and may invite you to an interview, including by video link (Resolution No. 118, para. 10).

Processing Timeline

01

Submission

Day 0. Documents and biometrics submitted at VFS Dhaka. Fees paid. Receipt issued.

Keep your receipt. It is required to collect the passport if successful.

02

Processing

After the embassy receives the file. By law the embassy decides within up to 10 working days of receiving the documents, up to 30 working days if additional checks are needed; urgent issuance takes up to 5 working days at double the consular fee (Resolution No. 118, paras. 19, 24). Add a few days for the file to travel from VFS Dhaka to New Delhi and back.

Do not book flights until the visa is in your passport. Airlines will not board you without a valid visa.

03

Collection or Notification

VFS notifies you by SMS or email when the passport is ready. Collect in person with the receipt or use the VFS courier.

If refused, you are told the grounds and a refusal mark is placed in the passport (para. 29). Keep the decision: you need it for an appeal letter.

Common Rejection Reasons

Based on cases we handle, the following are the most frequent grounds on which the Embassy of Ukraine in New Delhi refuses Type D visa applications from Bangladeshi nationals.

Invalid or Expired InsuranceMissing medical insurance is a refusal ground (para. 28). Check that the policy covers Ukraine, gives at least €30,000 cover and is valid for at least your first trip.
Mismatched Contract and Work Permit DatesInconsistent dates or names across your documents lead to questions or requests for additional documents (para. 10). Check that the work permit copy, passport and form match.
Unverifiable EmployerIf the purpose of the trip cannot be confirmed, or documents turn out to be false, the embassy refuses (para. 28). Check the employer's EDRPOU in the public register before you pay anyone.
Insufficient Insurance CoverageUkraine requires a minimum of €30,000 in medical coverage. Policies with lower limits are non-compliant. Some agents sell 'Ukraine visa insurance' policies with coverage limits below this threshold — check the sum insured explicitly.

What to Do If Your Visa Is Refused

A refusal is open to review. The embassy tells you the grounds of refusal and places a refusal mark in your passport (Resolution No. 118, para. 29). Within 60 working days you can send an appeal letter to the same mission and ask for a second review, which takes up to 10 working days (para. 30).

Steps to take after a refusal:

  • Read the refusal reason carefully and identify the specific ground cited
  • Do not re-apply immediately — address the documented deficiency first
  • Obtain any corrected or missing documents (updated insurance, proof of funds, corrected form)
  • If the refusal cites employer fraud or document authenticity concerns, seek legal advice before re-applying — a second refusal on the same grounds is significantly harder to recover from
  • Send an appeal letter within 60 working days (para. 30), or re-apply with a full clean set of documents plus a cover letter addressing the previous refusal
Do not pay to 'fix' a refusal

Agents who claim to be able to 'fix' or 'cancel' a visa refusal through contacts at the Embassy or VFS are operating a scam. Refusals are recorded in consular databases. They cannot be deleted by a local agent. Your own remedies are an appeal letter to the mission (para. 30) or a corrected new application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for a Type D visa before my work permit is issued?

No. The embassy needs a certified copy of an issued work permit for an employment-based Type D visa (Resolution No. 118, para. 8). The work permit must be obtained first, in Ukraine, by your employer. Only after it has been issued and you receive a certified copy can you submit a visa application.

How long does a Type D visa allow me to stay in Ukraine?

A Type D visa is issued as a multiple-entry visa for 90 days (Resolution No. 118, para. 4). Within that time you obtain a temporary residence permit. Once in Ukraine, file the TRP documents at DMSU no later than 15 working days before your permitted stay ends (Resolution No. 322, para. 17).

Is there an appeal process for a refused Type D visa?

Yes. Within 60 working days of receiving the refusal you can send an appeal letter to the same mission that refused, explaining your position and asking for a second review; the review takes up to 10 working days. If the second review also ends in refusal, a further appeal letter is not allowed, and you can file a new visa application (Resolution No. 118, paras. 29, 30).

Can my family join me in Ukraine on a family Type D visa while I work there?

Yes, once you hold a temporary residence permit in Ukraine. The work permit and the employment-based visa let you enter and work. After arrival, you apply for a temporary residence permit. Once that is issued, your family members may apply for family-based Type D visas.

Do I need to get the BMET clearance before or after the visa?

After. Section 4(2) of the Overseas Employment and Migrants Act 2013 requires BMET clearance together with the work permit and the visa, so the clearance comes once the visa is in your passport. Departing for work without it breaches section 4 of that Act, and a worker without clearance risks being stopped at departure.
