Ukraine Student Route FAQ for Bangladeshi Students

Ukraine has long attracted Bangladeshi students, particularly for medicine and engineering. The student route has its own visa type, BMET process, and TRP requirements separate from the worker route. Here are direct answers to the most common questions we receive from students and their families.

Which universities in Ukraine accept Bangladeshi students?

Ukraine has over 200 accredited universities (state and private) that accept foreign students. Major universities include Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Kharkiv National Medical University, Lviv Polytechnic, National Aviation University. Apply directly to the university's international admissions office. Do not rely on agents claiming exclusive placement rights.

Do I need UGC recognition of my Ukrainian university?

UGC (University Grants Commission of Bangladesh) recognition affects whether your Ukrainian degree will be recognised for employment or further study in Bangladesh. It does NOT affect your ability to get a Ukrainian student visa. Choose your university based on both Ukrainian accreditation (MON Ukraine) and UGC recognition if your post-study career in Bangladesh matters.

What visa type do I need as a student?

Type D student visa. Issued by the Ukrainian Embassy in Dhaka. Requires: university acceptance letter on official letterhead, financial proof, medical certificate, medical insurance, completed application form, and BMET clearance for students.

Do I need BMET clearance as a student?

BMET has a separate clearance category for students going abroad for study. Requirements evolve — check current BMET guidelines. As of 2026, BMET clearance is recommended and required for students departing Bangladesh for study abroad.

Can I work while studying in Ukraine?

Generally, part-time work is permitted on a student TRP without a separate work permit, provided it is genuinely part-time and does not conflict with your study status. Full-time employment requires a separate work permit. The exact rules have fluctuated — confirm with a legal adviser before working.

How do I get a student TRP?

Within 15–30 working days of entering Ukraine on your D-student visa, apply at DMSU with: passport, visa, university enrollment certificate, registered address proof, photos, fee. TRP duration typically matches your enrollment period.

What if I fail or withdraw from my university?

Your student TRP ground lapses if you are no longer enrolled. You must either re-enrol, transfer to another ground (employment, business), or depart Ukraine before the TRP expires. Remaining in Ukraine without a valid ground is an overstay offence.

What are the tuition costs at Ukrainian universities?

Tuition ranges widely: medical and pharmaceutical programs BDT 2,50,000–5,00,000 per year equivalent (UAH 60,000–1,50,000); engineering programs UAH 40,000–80,000 per year; humanities and social sciences UAH 30,000–60,000 per year. Significantly cheaper than UK, Australia, or Canada — but requires Ukraine's security context to be acceptable to you.

Is Ukraine safe for students in 2026?

Western Ukrainian cities (Lviv, Uzhhorod, Ivano-Frankivsk) remain substantially more stable than eastern and southern regions. Many foreign students study in western Ukraine. However, the entire country experiences periodic air alerts and no part of Ukraine is entirely without risk during the conflict. This is a personal and family decision that requires honest risk assessment.

Does a student TRP allow me to stay permanently?

No. Student TRP is tied to enrollment. It counts toward the 5-year TRP period that can lead to permanent residence application, but only years of lawful residence count — time as a student counts if continuously enrolled and TRP was valid.

Can I work part-time on a student visa in Ukraine?

Yes, with important limits. On a student TRP (not just the initial D-visa), you may work up to half the statutory working week — typically 20 hours per week — without a separate work permit. You must have a valid student TRP in place first; the D-visa alone does not authorise work. Working more than the permitted hours exposes you to TRP revocation. Any full-time job requires a separate work permit obtained through an employer.

What if my university is in a conflict-affected city?

If your enrolled university is in Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, or another city that has experienced shelling, you have several options. Many universities have opened satellite campuses or online study modes in western Ukraine. Contact your university's international students' office to confirm where classes are physically held. For new applicants, choosing a university based in Lviv, Uzhhorod, or Ivano-Frankivsk significantly reduces conflict-related disruption risk. If your existing university relocates mid-program, your student TRP remains valid as long as you remain enrolled — notify DMSU of any address change.

Can I switch from the student route to the work route in Ukraine?

Yes — but not automatically. You must have a Ukrainian employer apply for a new work permit on your behalf through DSZ. This is the same process as a fresh work permit application, including the 30-day labour market test. Once the work permit is issued, you apply for a new employment-based TRP. You can remain in Ukraine during this transition if your student TRP is still valid. Do not let your student TRP lapse before the work permit and new TRP are confirmed — there is no grace period for switching grounds mid-expiry.

What is the minimum English requirement for Ukrainian university admission?

There is no uniform national English requirement in Ukraine — each university sets its own language requirements. Most Ukrainian universities offer English-medium programs for international students (particularly in medicine and engineering) and accept students without an IELTS score, relying instead on their own entry tests or conditional admission. Some universities require a minimum IELTS 5.5 or equivalent for English-medium programs; others accept proof of prior English-medium education. Confirm the specific requirement with your target university's international admissions office before applying. For Ukrainian-medium programs, basic Ukrainian language preparatory year courses are typically included.
