Ukraine Residence Permit Renewal for Bangladeshi Nationals: Process, Timeline, and What Changes

TRP renewal is not automatic. Ukraine's State Migration Service scrutinises renewals more carefully than initial applications — particularly for business-ground TRPs. This guide covers timing, required documents by ground, what DMSU actually checks, and the situations where renewal is more complicated than expected.

Why Renewal Requires Separate Preparation

Many Bangladeshi nationals who have successfully obtained their first TRP treat the renewal as a formality — the same process, same documents, done again. This assumption causes problems. Renewal applications are reviewed at a higher level of scrutiny than initial applications because the DMSU is now verifying not only that the legal grounds exist, but that you have actually been living in Ukraine on those grounds as stated.

For employment-ground TRP holders, this means the DMSU will look for evidence that you are genuinely employed. For business-ground holders, they will look for evidence of genuine business activity. A renewal application that provides the same documents as the initial application — but no evidence of the activity claimed — is at real risk of refusal.

Critical timing rule

If your TRP expires before you submit your renewal application, you fall out of legal status immediately. There is no grace period in Ukrainian law. Residing in Ukraine after TRP expiry without a pending renewal creates an overstay situation with consequences for future applications and potentially for re-entry. Start the process no later than 2–3 months before expiry.

When to Start the Renewal Process

Ukrainian law permits TRP renewal applications to be submitted up to 30 days before expiry. The DMSU officially recommends beginning the process 2–3 months before expiry. In practice, the gap between "legally permitted" and "recommended" matters because:

  • Document gathering takes time — especially if you need updated employer documents, renewed work permits, or bank statement prints
  • DMSU appointment availability varies by city and season — Kyiv and Lviv can have waits of 3–4 weeks for first available appointments
  • If your work permit is also expiring (it often expires on the same timeline), the employer must renew the work permit first, which adds its own processing time
  • If any issues are identified during the renewal process, you need time to resolve them before expiry

The practical rule: if your TRP expires in October, begin organising renewal documents in July. If your work permit expires at the same time, your employer should begin the work permit renewal process even earlier — ideally 4–5 months before expiry.

Employment-Ground TRP Renewal

For Bangladeshi nationals on employment-ground TRPs — the most common category — the renewal process is tied to the status of your work permit and your employment relationship.

Work permit firstIf your work permit is expiring at the same time as your TRP, the employer must renew the work permit through DSZ before the TRP renewal application is submitted. A TRP renewal for employment grounds without a valid work permit will be refused.
Documents requiredRenewed work permit (original), current employment contract, salary payment evidence (bank statements showing regular UAH salary deposits), passport, current TRP card, registration of place of residence (propiska), photos, state fee payment
Salary evidenceThe DMSU expects to see bank statement records showing that salary has been received regularly from your stated employer. Statements covering at least the past 3–6 months are typically required.
Employment contractMust be the current, in-force contract. If your original contract was for a fixed term that has been extended, bring the extension agreement as well as the original.
What DMSU checksThat you are working for the employer stated in your TRP, that the work permit is valid, that salary payments are regular and consistent with the contract, and that your registration address is current.

If Your Employer Changed Mid-TRP

Work permits in Ukraine are employer-specific. If you changed employers during your TRP validity period without updating your documentation, you have been working without authorisation for the new employer — regardless of how the change happened.

At renewal, the DMSU will review whether your salary payments match the employer on your current TRP. If they do not, the renewal will expose the employment change. This is a complex situation that requires legal advice before the renewal application is submitted. Do not attempt to submit a renewal that misrepresents your employment situation — the consequences of a discovered misrepresentation are significantly worse than addressing the change proactively.

The correct process if you wish to change employers is: new work permit application by the new employer → new D/EM visa → TRP update with DMSU. There is no shortcut that bypasses the work permit stage.

Business-Ground TRP Renewal (TOV Ownership)

Business-ground TRP renewals are the most scrutinised category in the Bangladeshi applicant population. The initial TRP is issued based on company registration. The renewal is based on evidence that the company has been genuinely operating.

Documents requiredCurrent EDRPOU company extract from the registry, tax filings for the past year (quarterly returns), bank statements showing business transactions, contracts with clients or suppliers, director's employment contract with the company, director's payroll records
"Genuine activity" definitionThe DMSU interprets genuine business activity as evidence of actual transactions — client invoices paid, supplier contracts fulfilled, revenue and expense flows in the company account. A company that is registered but has zero transactions is not demonstrating genuine activity.
Tax complianceAll quarterly tax returns must have been filed on time. Outstanding tax obligations or missed filings are a renewal risk factor. Verify your tax filing status with your Ukrainian accountant before submitting the renewal.
Director employmentThe DMSU expects the TOV director to be employed by the company with a formal employment contract and regular salary payments. This is frequently overlooked — many TOV founders do not formalise their own employment relationship with the company.
Common refusal groundCompany shows registration but no demonstrable business activity, no revenue, and no client/supplier relationships. The TRP was obtained on business grounds but the company has not functioned as a genuine business.

If your company has been inactive, begin generating genuine business activity well before the renewal application — not in the weeks immediately before submission. DMSU reviewers are experienced in distinguishing activity patterns that pre-date the review from genuine ongoing operations.

Student-Ground TRP Renewal

Renewal for Bangladeshi students enrolled at Ukrainian universities is the simpler of the three main categories, provided the academic relationship remains intact.

  • University enrollment letter: Current academic year enrollment confirmation from the university registrar
  • Academic progress evidence: Grade transcript or academic progress letter — the DMSU may request this to confirm you are an active student, not merely registered
  • Financial proof: Continued evidence of sufficient funds to support yourself — either personal funds, family support, or scholarship documentation
  • Standard documents: Passport, current TRP card, registration address, photos, state fee

If you have taken an academic leave of absence, this must be disclosed and appropriate documentation provided. An enrollment letter from a university while you are on leave may not satisfy the DMSU that you are actively pursuing the study that justified the initial TRP.

Changing Employers During the TRP Period

To be explicit about the employment-change situation, which is one of the most frequent complications we encounter:

  • Work permits are employer-specific. Your permit covers employment with Employer A. It does not cover employment with Employer B, even if Employer B is willing to hire you.
  • If your employer closes, is liquidated, or terminates your employment, your work permit becomes invalid. You do not automatically acquire the right to work for another employer.
  • The correct legal path is for the new employer to file a new work permit application with DSZ, obtain a new permit, and for you to update your TRP accordingly — or exit and re-enter on a new D/EM visa if required by the timeline.
  • There is no formal grace period in Ukrainian law for the gap between employers. Brief periods between employers can be managed with legal advice, but there is no statutory bridge period that permits you to remain working legally between employers without a valid permit.

Travel During a Pending TRP Renewal

This is one of the most commonly asked questions at the renewal stage. The short answer: exercise caution, and take legal advice for your specific situation.

When a TRP renewal application is pending and the current TRP is still valid, you may in principle travel and return — your TRP is still in force, and your renewal is pending, not decided. The risk arises when:

  • Your current TRP expires while you are outside Ukraine and the renewal has not yet been decided — you may not be able to re-enter on an expired TRP even with a pending renewal
  • Your D-visa (the entry visa that accompanied your original TRP application) has expired — even if your TRP is valid, you may need a valid visa to re-enter depending on the border crossing and the circumstances
  • You are travelling close to the TRP expiry date — the calculation of what documents remain valid for re-entry is fact-specific

If you need to travel during the renewal period, review the specific validity dates on all your documents and take legal advice before departing. Do not assume that a pending renewal covers re-entry.
