How to Send Money from Ukraine to Bangladesh: A Practical Guide for Workers

Ukraine's banking system has been under significant pressure since 2022, but multiple legal remittance channels remain operational. This guide covers every realistic option for Bangladeshi workers in Ukraine sending money home — what works, what the fees are, what the limits are, and what to avoid.

Why Legal Channels Are Not Optional

Hawala — the informal money transfer system — is illegal in Ukraine. Using hawala exposes you to criminal liability under Ukrainian law, regardless of whether the amounts are small and regardless of whether "everyone does it." Ukrainian financial intelligence and law enforcement have been specifically active on informal money transfer during the wartime period.

Beyond the legal risk in Ukraine, BMET and Bangladesh Bank authorities increasingly monitor remittance patterns for overseas workers. Legal remittance channels create a documented financial trail that supports your position in future TRP renewals and any financial standing assessments DMSU may conduct. Documented remittances are evidence of legitimate employment income. Undocumented cash movements are not.

Western Union

AvailabilityService points in major Ukrainian cities — Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Dnipro, and others. Check westernunion.com/ua for current locations. Some wartime closures apply in eastern regions.
Sending limitsVaries by verification level. Typically up to $1,000–$3,000 per transaction without enhanced KYC verification. Higher limits require additional identity documentation.
FeesApproximately 1.5–5% depending on the amount, the send method (cash vs. card), and current promotions. Larger amounts generally fall toward the lower end of the fee range.
Recipient collectionRecipient collects at Western Union agent locations in Bangladesh — major commercial banks (Dutch-Bangla, BRAC Bank, Islami Bank, others) and post offices. Western Union's Bangladesh network is extensive.
Processing timeTypically same-day or next-day for cash pickup. Online-to-bank options may take 1–2 business days.

Western Union is the most accessible option for workers who do not have a Ukrainian bank account. Cash-to-cash transfers can be done at a service point with just your ID. For recipients in rural Bangladesh, Western Union's agent coverage in district-level towns makes it practical.

MoneyGram

MoneyGram operates similarly to Western Union — cash-to-cash and card-based transfers, with agent collection points in Bangladesh. The Ukraine agent network is smaller than Western Union's but operational in major cities. Check moneygram.com for the current Ukraine agent list; wartime disruptions have reduced some locations.

Fees and limits are comparable to Western Union. If Western Union has no convenient service point near you in Ukraine, MoneyGram is the next option to check.

Bank Transfer (SWIFT)

If you have a Ukrainian bank account — PrivatBank and Monobank are the most accessible for foreign nationals — you can send SWIFT transfers directly to a Bangladesh bank account.

Opening an accountPrivatBank and Monobank have onboarded foreign nationals with valid TRP and passport. Process and requirements can change; visit a branch in person with your TRP, work permit, and passport. Monobank allows partial online onboarding.
SWIFT transfer processProvide the recipient's Bangladesh bank SWIFT code, account number, and the recipient's name exactly as on the account. Errors in recipient details cause delays or returns.
Processing time2–5 business days, depending on correspondent bank routing.
FeesTypically UAH 200–500 fixed fee from the Ukrainian bank, plus possible correspondent bank fees deducted from the amount at the recipient's end. Total cost varies.
NBU currency controlsUkrainian currency controls on outgoing international transfers have changed multiple times since 2022. Verify current National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) regulations before attempting a large SWIFT transfer. Your bank's compliance officer can advise on current limits.

Wise (formerly TransferWise)

Wise operates in Ukraine, though wartime restrictions have affected some features. Verify current availability at wise.com before relying on it. When fully operational, Wise typically offers the lowest fee structure of any option — approximately 0.5–1.5% with a transparent mid-market exchange rate.

Recipients receive BDT directly to their Bangladesh bank account, which is more convenient than cash collection. Wise requires smartphone verification and a valid ID. If Wise is operational for Ukraine-to-Bangladesh transfers at the time you are sending, it is worth using.

Exchange Rates and What Actually Matters

There is no direct UAH/BDT currency pair. All transfers convert UAH to USD (or EUR) and then to BDT. This means two exchange rate conversions occur, and each has a spread — the gap between the mid-market rate and the rate actually applied to your transfer.

What to look at when comparing options:

  • Total cost = stated fee + spread. An option with a low stated fee but a poor exchange rate may cost more than one with a higher stated fee and a better rate. Use the recipient amount — in BDT — as the actual comparison metric.
  • UAH has been under National Bank management since 2022. The official rate has been periodically adjusted. At time of writing, approximately 40–41 UAH per USD. Verify the current NBU rate before sending.
  • BDT/USD at Bangladesh end: approximately 110 BDT per USD at time of writing. Verify current Bangladesh Bank rate.
  • Lock in rates where possible: Some services offer rate locks for transfers initiated online. Rates can move between initiating and settling a transfer.

A Practical Example

A Bangladeshi worker in Lviv earns UAH 18,000 gross per month. After income tax and social contributions, net take-home is approximately UAH 14,200. Monthly living costs — food, transport, phone, incidentals, with employer-provided housing — run approximately UAH 10,000.

Available for remittance: UAH 4,200.

At 40.5 UAH/USD: approximately $103.

Less Western Union fee at 3%: net $100, approximately BDT 11,000.

At this rate, annual remittance is approximately BDT 132,000 — a meaningful supplement to household income in Bangladesh. Workers in higher-wage sectors (IT, healthcare, manufacturing) or with employer-paid housing and meals in a lower-cost city can remit significantly more.

The wages and cost of living analysis in the linked post below covers sector-by-sector projections in more detail.

What to Avoid

Informal money carriers

Other workers carrying cash to Bangladesh on your behalf — risk of theft, no recourse, no documentation. Do not do this regardless of how trustworthy the carrier seems.

Unregistered exchange shops

Informal exchange shops claiming better rates than banks or licensed services. These are illegal in Ukraine. The "better rate" disappears when the shop closes overnight or refuses to complete the transfer.

Sending more than documented wages

Sending amounts significantly exceeding your documented salary income creates anti-money laundering flags with both Ukrainian and Bangladeshi financial authorities. Keep remittances proportionate to documented income.

Zero-fee apps with no visible licence

Services claiming zero fees and Ukraine-to-Bangladesh transfers via a mobile app should be verified as licensed money transmitters before use. Many are not licensed in Ukraine or Bangladesh. Verify on the NBU's published list of licensed payment services.

Document Your Remittances

Keep Western Union and MoneyGram receipts. Save bank transfer confirmation records. These documents serve two purposes: they are your recourse if a transfer is delayed or lost, and they are evidence of documented income source if DMSU ever raises questions about your financial standing during a TRP renewal assessment.

A pattern of regular, modest remittances through licensed channels is consistent with the employment profile of a documented foreign worker. It supports your immigration position rather than undermining it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Ukrainian bank account to send remittances?

No. Western Union and MoneyGram both allow cash-to-cash transfers from service points in Ukraine without a bank account. You bring your ID and cash to the service point and complete the transfer on the spot. A bank account enables SWIFT transfers and Wise, which may offer better rates for larger amounts, but it is not a prerequisite for remitting.

How does the recipient collect in Bangladesh?

For Western Union and MoneyGram, the recipient visits any agent location — typically a branch of a participating bank — with their national ID and the transfer reference number you provide them. For bank transfers, the funds arrive directly in their account with no collection required. The recipient should have a bank account for SWIFT and Wise transfers; cash collection requires only ID and the reference number.

Are there monthly or annual limits on how much I can send?

Ukrainian NBU currency controls have set limits on outgoing international transfers by individuals, and these have changed multiple times since 2022. As of mid-2026, consult your Ukrainian bank or the NBU website for current individual transfer limits. Western Union and MoneyGram have per-transaction and per-period limits that vary by verification level — completing full KYC verification raises these limits.

Can I send money from Ukraine if my work permit has expired?

The banking system does not directly check your immigration status for individual transfers. However, sending money from Ukraine when you are not legally present compounds an already serious situation. If your work permit or TRP has expired, the priority is resolving your immigration status — not managing remittances. Seek legal advice on your immigration position first.
